At the Gate

A landed cardinal shakes
heavy boughs -
forged red-glow swags
on the leaves. Kneeling,
eyes covered, I wait
for a runner.
Will he spring forth
with winged foot and wand,
clashing ice-wind to
strip boughs bare?
A hinge creaks,
wing brushes my ear.

You woke me in the night with your beating drum
of copper pins and elk skin. The shook notes
from your sulphurous drum, resounding, spoke
into droning dark and through snow.
Further off a forked beam of purging white
hissed from mechanical mouth, jaw of some
god-beast bull-like and billowing smoke
swaddled close to the house frame's glow.
Brother, your hammer's mind lashing so bold,
I fear your miner's will's furnace will crack
in your throat. Sulphurous drum, sonorous drone
resounding, resounding through smoke.

Roses Hallowed

From a close of roses hallowed,
I saw you there.
